About the Department

Department of Veterinary medicine was opened by enrolling 45 undergraduate veterinary medicine students (DVM) in 2004 E.C. Initially the department was offering an undergraduate program leading to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) Degree in Veterinary Medicine. The department has produced DVM graduates for the fifth times and comprised of diversified academic staffs which are capable of performing different professional activities. At the present the department is enrolling a total of 180 students in undergraduate regular DVM program.

 

The existing DVM curriculum has been revised in 2011 as a national harmonized Modular. In 2017 the Ethiopian government has embarked educational reform and developed an education development road map that has been started to be implemented in 2019/20 academic calendar. Based on this educational reform, the existing DVM curriculum has been revised and adjusted in 2021. Moreover, the department has launched master’s degree program in veterinary Public Health and Veterinary Epidemiology and Animal Health Economics in 2021/22.

 

The DVM program aspires to produce competent veterinarians who can deliver quality service to the society in: Diagnosis and treatment of various ailments in animals, Prevention and control of animal diseases, Research in animal heath and biomedical sciences, Teaching/training in the area of veterinary medicine, Involve in control of hygiene of foods of animal origin, Prevention of zoonoses and Reporting of notifiable animal diseases.

Mission

The departments of Veterinary Medicine is dedicated to providing quality education of the college’s teaching-learning processes and ensures the relevance of teaching-learning methodologies being implemented for the ease of conceptualization by the learners and provide consultancy service with agro pastoralists on different animal health issues. To conduct problem solving research and community service and there by producing qualified competent and ethical graduates.

Vision

To make Samara University College of veterinary medicine to be a nationally and internationally recognized center of excellence in safeguarding, accreditation and enhancement of the standards and quality of education of Samara University by making practice orientate, well evaluated, graduates with well contextualized to the national market demand, at same time adaptable & proficient with the international competence.

Department Facilities

The Department of Veterinary Medicine offers courses in comfortable classrooms. The department has 5 undergraduate DVM regular classes and 1 postgraduate AC installed classes, one computer or internet room and 5 standard/conventional laboratories (Microbiology, Parasitology, Molecular biology, Histo-pathology and Anatomy laboratories). It is planning to further expand or add Virology and Immunology laboratories.

The Department Head

The Department Head is selected from among the teaching staff of the department on the basis of merit and interest as soon as the college announces the vacancy for the post. The term of office of the Department Head is two years. Currently, Dr. Yasin Mohammed is serving as Head of the Department.

Degree Program

General objective of the DVM curriculum

  • To promote quality education in Veterinary medicine, perform research in the areas of animal health and production and provide public and consultancy services of diverse nature.

Specific objectives are as follows:

  • To produce veterinarians competent in the practice of general veterinary medicine which include food animal practice, companion animal practice and veterinary public health
  • To equip them with the knowledge and skills in the diagnosis, treatment prevention and control of animal diseases, veterinary public health, animal production, research and extension
  • To increase food resources of Ethiopia both in quantity and quality by participating in the formulation and implementing effective monitoring and control methods of diseases
  • To participate in the improvement of herd fertility and overall production of livestock under different production systems, taking into account the environmental and cultural traditions of the society
  • To conduct continuing education program for upgrading and updating the knowledge and skills of animal health personnel
  • To promote problem solving research and disseminate knowledge and research outputs to various stakeholders
  • To provide public and consultancy services on animal health and production
  • To advocate the concept of one health approach

Graduate Profiles

A veterinary graduate must have the basic scientific knowledge, skills and values to practice veterinary medicine independently at the time of graduation. Accordingly, the graduates of this program are expected to attain the following competencies in terms of:

Knowledge:

  • Normal and abnormal biological structures and functions of domestic and wild animals
  • Behavior, welfare, management, breeding, feeding and housing of different species of domestic animals
  • Knowledge on the epidemiology, prevention and control of major national and international animal diseases
  • Pharmacological and toxicological principles and veterinary biologicals
  • Promoting and maintaining human health through the application of veterinary public health principles in the provision of safe, sound and wholesome foodstuffs of animal origin, and the control of zoonoses
  • Knowledge on livestock economics, entrepreneurship and business management
  • Understand the principles and application of one health philosophy

Skills:

  • Handle, diagnose, treat, control and prevent the common disease conditions of domestic animal species
  • Collect and interpret clinical and research information advise and teaching on animal health and production, welfare and ethics
  • Select and collect specimens for laboratory tests and interpret the results
  • Present ideas and evidences orally and writing
  • Perform clinical, surgical and theriogenological procedures
  • Design and conduct scientific research independently

Attitude:

  • A person of higher creativity, social consciousness, and professional ethics with a sense of responsibility to work towards national goals and development
  • Conduct productive professional activities in accordance with ethical and legal codes for the well-being of animals and the benefit the society

The total ECTS/CP in the 6 years DVM program is 403 with a semester load of 30 – 35 ECTS.

Admission Requirements

For DVM program, As per the new MOSHE guideline considering the current curriculum revision student department selection method will be based on the following approaches; an orientation regarding available departments found in the institution and their relevance need to be given and awareness can be created by brochure and leaflets. Students will be subjected to rank all the departments according their priority interest.

  • Then, Selection can be made by using the ESLCE (40%), first semester result (30%) and Entrance exam related their attitude (30%).

Advance standing (for diploma holders) candidates who graduated from recognized academic institutions in animal health, Animal production and related natural science fields and who passed Certification of Competency (CoC) and entrance examination.

Graduation Requirements

Candidates fulfilling the following criteria are eligible for graduation

  • A minimum total credit point/ ECTS of 385
  • A minimum cGPA of 2.00 at the end of the final year

Masters Programs

Program Objectives

The major goal of veterinary epidemiology and economics program is to produce pragmatic specialists with the knowledge, skills and attitude that meet the current and future challenges in the area of veterinary epidemiology and economics.

  • The specific objectives of the master program of veterinary epidemiology and economics are
    • To offer specialized training leading to a Master of Veterinary Science degree in
      Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics.
    • To provide young and mid-career veterinarians courses needed for teaching, research and specific development programs in the area of epidemiology, animal health economics, prevention and control of animal diseases, surveillance, risk analysis and data management.
    • To strengthen the teaching, research activities and consultancy service of College of Veterinary Medicine in Samara University and other institutions of the country.

 

The general objective of Veterinary Public Health programme is to produce qualified and competent Veterinary Public Health specialists who acquired advanced scientific knowledge, practical skills and attitudes in area of Veterinary Public Health and tackles the problem and challenges of Veterinary Public Health.

  • The specific objectives of the programme are:
    • To offer specialised training that leads to MVSc Degree in Veterinary Public Health
    • To produce qualified VPH professionals who are capable to bring changes and able to tackle the Veterinary Public Health challenges at pastoral  settings
    • To attain graduates that contribute in the country’s national development programme in area of Veterinary Public Health, prevention and control of emerging and re-emerging zoonotic diseases.

Graduate Profiles

The curriculum of the Veterinary Epidemiology and economics program designed with the view that graduates who successfully complete their study shall be able to: –

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the key concepts underpinning the discipline of
    veterinary epidemiology and animal health economics
  • Select an appropriate study design when confronted with an epidemiological
    research question and develop a detailed study protocol capable of answering the
    research question,
  • Analyze and interpret epidemiological data derived from epidemiological studies
    and give evidence based recommendation,
  • Critically review published epidemiological literature and show the gaps for future
    research,
  • Apply appropriate statistical, epidemiological and econometric principle in
    undertaking population based study and investigation,
  • Apply epidemiological and economic principles in calculating the risk associated
    animal health and associated intervention of animal diseases prevention and control
    measures
  • Apply the principles and concepts of safe food production and make an objective
    judgment of contemporary issues such as antibiotic resistance, drug and chemical
  • Develop appropriate strategies for combating chronic farm animal diseases, control
    zoonotic diseases and apply herd health programs to maximize economic returns
    from animal production,
  • Apply epidemiological techniques in providing reliable information and
    implementing collaborative control measures during international and national
    diseases epidemics
  • Advise key policy makers as well as concerned authorities/institutions regarding to
    animal disease outbreaks/epidemics and other pandemic trans-boundary diseases of
    economic as well as public health importance.
  • Able to select economically profitable disease control methods and conduct costbenefit analysis for the control method that will be selected
  • Conducting risk analysis for any new programs and newly introduced animals,
    animal products and byproducts from abroad countries.

 

The curriculum of the Veterinary Public Health program designed with the view that graduates who successfully complete their study shall be able to: –

  • Understand the advanced knowledge of VPH in the scope of food quality and safety and zoonotic diseases
  • Equipped with the knowledge in technical planning, teaching and development programs;
  • Competent in the practice of VPHpractice; assessment of public health and economic impacts of zoonosis and food borne disease
  • Able to design zoonotic disease control strategies , food safety and quality control, conducting VPH research and recommending/formulating alternative policy options in the country;
  • Motivated for creativity, social consciousness, respect diversified traditions and values of the country, committed to professional ethics and abides by the legal codes of handling animals and dealing with human beings, readiness to learn from ever changing circumstances and work with others by sharing common values and feel sense of responsibility and accountability to work toward national development goals
  • Effectively advocating and promoting public health among the general public and policy makers

Admission Requirement

Admission requirements for veterinary public health

The candidates who meet the following requirements will be admitted to the programme in line with other Samara University rules and regulations governing graduate programmes:

  • A candidate must be a holder of a recognized degree in Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Human Medicine (MD), and Bachelor of Veterinary science (BVSc) with a minimum of cGPA 2.0.
  • Candidates holding Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) must audit core/specific courses (VPH I/II) from DVM programs per the recommendation of the department head. That means the candidate must learn and pass the assessment as per the university legislation for these two courses (VPH I & II) within one semester.
  • A candidate submits a testimony of financial support and recommendation letter.
  • Candidates who satisfy all the above requirements may be required to sit and pass entrance examinations.
  • If applicants are more than a needed number we do give priority for candidates holding DVM background.

Admission Requirements for veterinary epidemiology and animal health economics

Candidates who will join the program must have DVM or Bachelor degree in animal health/ veterinary sciences and fulfill the following criteria:

  • The candidate should pass entrance exam and fit to criteria that will be set by the department
  • The candidate should also submit a testimony of financial support letter or should pay all the payments according to Samara University postgraduate council rules for admission
  • Two letters of recommendation

Graduate requirement

  • The Master of Science in veterinary epidemiology and economics and Master of Science in Veterinary Public Health curriculum is a two years program on regular basis. Students enrolled in this program must meet the graduation criteria of Samara University as stated in the legislation and should have no more than one “C” grade in all courses and a minimum CGPA of 3.00 up on graduation. “D” grade is not allowed in any of the courses for graduation.
  • A student to be recommended for graduation should be awarded a minimum score of Good (B) by the examination board based on the quality of thesis and oral defence as per of university standard set above under heading of assessment type and method.
